Frequently Asked Questions About Rodents

Have questions? We are here to help. Still have questions or can't find the answer you need? Give us a call at 954-945-9065 today!

  • What are rodents?

Rodents are mammals that are grouped together because of their teeth. All rodents have front incisors that grow continuously throughout their life. Mice and rats, specifically roof rats and Norway rats, are the most common rodents to become a problem in Fort Lauderdale homes. Luckily rats and mice don’t usually live in the same area, so it will generally be one or the other that invades your property.

Mice are small rodents. They have oval bodies, triangular-shaped heads, ears that sit up off their heads, and long tails. Both their ears and tails are covered in velvety fur. Mice are agile creatures. They can climb, jump, and wriggle their way through tight spaces.

Norway rats are large, heavy-bodied rats. They have brown fur and are not very agile; these rats like to hang out at ground level. The roof rat is a small rat with a slender body. They are incredibly agile and, as their name suggests, roof rats like to nest off the ground in trees and on the roofs of buildings.

  • Are rodents dangerous?

When rodents in Florida find their way into our homes, they pose significant health risks. Rats and mice spread illness through direct contact with the bacteria and pathogens they carry on their bodies and in their excrement and saliva.

Rodents are hosts to many parasites, including fleas and ticks; as rodents move around our yards and homes, they introduce these parasites to our properties. Fleas and ticks pose health risks to people and pets.

Rodents are also extremely destructive. They use their sharp front incisors to chew through and damage structural elements of our homes (wires, pipes, drywall), personal items (furniture, clothing, pictures), and food packaging.

  • Why do I have a rodent problem?

Things that may make your properties more susceptible to rodents include:

    • Holes in the exterior walls or roofline of your home
    • Tall grass and overgrown landscaping
    • Bird feeders
    • Open trash cans and recycling bins
    • Gardens and fruit trees
    • Water features like bird baths or wading pools
    • Open garage or basement doors

Rodents like mice and rats have developed a one-sided relationship with people. When living near people, rodents have learned that our properties offer them easy access to things that make their lives easier. Food, shelter, and water are all within their easy reach when they decide to call our Fort Lauderdale properties home.

  • Where will I find rodents?

Florida's warm climate makes it easy for rodents to survive outside. They can reproduce year-round; once they establish themselves in an area, they are challenging to control and eliminate. Rodents live successfully near people in our yards, garages, sheds, and houses.

Whether nesting inside or outside our homes, rodents will choose a quiet secluded area to build their nest. Inside houses, rodents nest in wall voids, crawl spaces, closets, basements, and attic spaces.

Rodents are nocturnal; therefore, unless there are many rats or mice in your home, you won't see them out and about during the day. They hide at their nesting site during the day and emerge at night to find food.

The most common signs of rodents in your home include hearing scratching or running sounds behind walls, finding dark, rice-like rodents droppings, or noticing a foul musty odor.

  • How do I get rid of rodents?

Rodents live in large populations throughout Florida, and keeping them out of our yards, homes, and businesses is a full-time commitment. Partnering with a professional is the easiest way to control rodents year-round and keep them out of your Fort Lauderdale house and away from your family. Mitchell Pest is a local pest control company that understands the behaviors and preferences of rodents that call Fort Lauderdale home. Our professionals are dedicated to helping homeowners maintain houses free of rodents and other household pests. • How can I prevent rodents in the future?

The best way to avoid problems with rodents is to take away their biggest attractant: food. To do so, try these tips:

    • Keep tight-fitting lids on trashcans and compost bins.
    • Remove bird feeders and wild animal feeders from your property.
    • Pick up uneaten pet food.
    • Regularly harvest gardens and fruit trees.
    • Keep outdoor eating and cooking areas free of leftover food debris.

To further prevent problems with rodents, it is also helpful to cut back tree branches and shrubbery from your home, repair gaps in your home’s exterior that offer entry points, and repair leaky pipes and fixtures that provide a water source.
